What Is a Momentum Composite Score? How AlphaScan Pro Scores Every Stock 0-100
Every day trading scanner on the market gives you a list of stocks. Some return 20 names. Some return 2,000. The problem is always the same — which one do you actually trade?
Most scanners leave that question entirely to you. They show you the data. You figure out the rest.
AlphaScan Pro takes a different approach. Instead of showing you a list and walking away, every stock in the scanner receives a single score from 0 to 100 called the Momentum Composite Score — or MCS.
One number. One decision.
The Problem With Single-Metric Scanning
Traditional scanners let you filter by individual metrics. Set minimum RVOL to 5x. Set minimum day change to 10%. Set max float to 20 million. Hit scan.
This works. But it has a fundamental limitation: each criterion is evaluated independently. A stock either passes or fails each filter. There's no nuance.
Consider two stocks:
Stock A: Up 11%, RVOL 5.2x, float 18M, no news, price $4.20 Stock B: Up 18%, RVOL 12x, float 4.1M, major news catalyst, price $3.87, pre-market gap 40%
Both pass a basic filter for 10% change and 5x RVOL. Both appear on your scanner. But Stock B is objectively a stronger setup. A simple filter can't tell you that. The MCS can.
Stock A: MCS 58 — marginal setup, proceed with caution Stock B: MCS 94 — elite setup, high conviction
The 9 Criteria Behind the MCS
The Momentum Composite Score evaluates every stock across 9 separate criteria simultaneously, then weights and combines them into a single score.
Criterion 1 — Day Change Percentage (up to 22 points) The most fundamental signal. Stocks up 10% or more are in active momentum. Change ≥ 10%: +22 points. Change ≥ 5%: +12 points.
Criterion 2 — Relative Volume (RVOL) (up to 20 points) RVOL compares today's volume to the stock's historical average, adjusted for the time of day. AlphaScan Pro uses time-adjusted RVOL — more accurate than dividing total volume by the daily average. RVOL ≥ 5x: +20 points. RVOL ≥ 2x: +10 points.
Criterion 3 — News Catalyst Quality (up to 20 points) Not all moves are equal. A stock up 40% on a Department of Defense contract is a fundamentally different setup than one up 40% on no visible catalyst. Catalyst score ≥ 85: +20 points. ≥ 70: +12 points. ≥ 50: +6 points.
Criterion 4 — Price Range (up to 10 points) The sweet spot for intraday momentum trading is $1–$20. Price $1–$20: +10 points.
Criterion 5 — Float Size (up to 14 points) Lower float means fewer shares chasing the same buying pressure — which creates more explosive moves. Float ≤ 5M: +14 points. ≤ 10M: +9 points. ≤ 20M: +5 points.
Criterion 6 — Float Rotation (up to 8 points) Float rotation measures how many times the entire float has traded today. Rotation ≥ 3x: +8 points. ≥ 1x: +4 points.
Criterion 7 — Short Squeeze Probability (up to 6 points) Short interest combined with upward price movement and high volume creates a squeeze scenario. Squeeze score ≥ 10: +6 points.
Bonus: Confirmed Mover (+7 points) When a stock appears in Polygon's real-time top gainers list, it receives additional credit as confirmation of relative volume significance.
What the MCS Score Means
- 85–100 (A+): Elite setup. High conviction. Full size.
- 70–84 (B): Strong setup. Worth watching. Normal size.
- 55–69 (C): Average setup. Extra caution. Reduced size.
- 0–54 (D): Weak setup. Consider skipping entirely.
The MCS is not a buy signal. What it is — is a rapid, consistent way to prioritize your attention across multiple stocks simultaneously.
Getting Started
The MCS score requires no configuration. Every stock that comes through the scanner receives it automatically. Sort by MCS descending (the default) and the best setups float to the top.
